Ta-Nehisi Coates

 

Ta-Nehisi Coates is an American author, journalist, educator and activist.  He has been compared to James Baldwin and heralded as the voice for this generation by Toni Morrison.  Coates newest book, “Between the World and Me,” is a letter to his 15 year old son telling him of Coates’ experience in his youth, his fears of bodily harm and police brutality, and his lack of faith that there will be justice or equality in the future.  Coates book, released in July of this year, is so timely it discusses the murder of Eric Garner by white police for selling cigarettes on the street and other stories that are in the news today.

Peggy McIntosh
 

Peggy McIntosh is a feminist and anti-racism activist.  She is most famous for authoring White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming To See Correspondences through Work in Women’s Studies,” in which she speaks about unpacking the invisible knapsack of white privilege, and lists 50 daily effects of white privilege she has observed including; “I can turn on the television or open to the front page of the paper and see people of my race widely represented,” “I can chose blemish cover or bandages in "flesh" color and have them more or less match my skin,” and “I can be sure that if I need legal or medical help, my race will not work against me.”

 

Sherene H. Razack
 
Sherene Razack is a Professor in Social Justice Education at OISE, University of Toronto.  She has taught courses in; Race and Knowledge Production, Race, Space and Citizenship, and Racism, Violence and the Law.  Her book “Looking White People in the Eye: Gender, Race, and Culture in Courtrooms and Classrooms,” examines how non white women are viewed and their experiences of institutional racism and gender discrimination.
